On Showing Up

Menger Bar
The bar where Teddy Roosevelt recruited the Rough Riders. No big deal.

Hi friends! I’ve missed you.

I’m in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to writing. The past few months have been hard, in a way that is no fun to write or read about — doctor’s appointments, financial reports, board meetings. I’ve been avoiding this space because I felt guilty for not writing, and the longer I didn’t write, the more daunting writing became. I almost decided to walk away from this blog forever.

But since it’s January, I decided to change up some things. Are you totally tired of reading other people’s New Years resolutions? I promise these will be quick:

  • No self-imposed blogging schedule — In a perfect world I’d be blogging multiple times a week, but sometimes that doesn’t happen. Beating myself up about it doesn’t help anyone, so I’ve decided to take away the self-imposed obligation. I think my writing and this blog will be better off for it.
  • Embracing imperfection — I read Stephanie’s post about the new direction she’s taking with her blog, and it really resonated with me. “So here it is, the start of a new chapter in the blog: the imperfect chapter. This is now going to be Desserts for breakfast: the notebook, the journal, the not overly-crafted diary.” Glossy, stylized photos are nice, but when I think about my favorite blog posts, they’re always the heartfelt, quirky, random posts. There’s a lot of pressure online to have perfect photos and perfect writing, but I’m going to *try* not to let it get to me this year. Easier said than done, right?
  • Just show up — This is my big resolution for 2016. (I think Alexandra Nelson’s Instagram has something to do with that.) It’s easy to flake out because of anxiety or fear or stress, but I’m so tired of that. I want to show up for friends, for family, for coworkers. I want to show up for this blog, even if I only have a short post. Even if no one reads it but my mom. (Hi, mom!) I’ve been playing it safe lately, so I’m going to work on being bolder this year. (Yikes!)
  • Have fun with it — This was kind of a serious post, but I really want to have fun with this blog. I want it to be fun to write and fun to read! And showing up is a little less scary if you’re doing something fun.

Whew! This was a doozy of a post! Honestly I’m totally freaked out about my big resolution this year. I have a feeling I’ll be reading the pep talks from Babe Vibes a LOT. What about you? Do you have any big, scary plans for 2016?
